A tweet to a graduate of Johns Hopkins who became an American History professor. I asked him for his input on how World War 1 trench warfare started or helped contribute to World War 2.
How Trench Warfare started WW2.
Trench Warfare was a large part in the start of World War 2. Trench Warfare costed nations lots of money and troops. When World War 1 was over Germany was forced to pay war reparations because they were blamed for starting World War 1. Germany was forced to pay billions in war costs to help the nations pay off war debt which caused rampant inflation. A loaf of bread costs 200,000,000,000 marks in November 1923 in Germany. That is equal to 138,192,025,815.51 in todays U.S. dollars. This hyperinflation led to the start of World War 2.
Hitler admits this in 1941, saying: "When I returned from the War, I brought back home with me my experiences at the front; out of them I built my National Socialist community." Indeed, the seeds of Hitler's twisted Darwinian theories, the ones that led to the creation of Auschwitz, were developed among corpses littering the First World War's trenches and dugouts.
